The Catalog for Giving of New York City, a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the lives of underprivileged children and teens of New York City, will host the 16th Annual Urban Heroes Awards Benefit on November 2, 2011.
The event will honor Marty Burger, Executive Vice President of Silverstein Properties, Inc. as the 2011 Corporate Urban Hero for his commitment to improving the lives of young people in New York City. In addition, nine young individuals will also be honored for their exceptional participation in The Catalog's programs.
"The Catalog for Giving enables young New Yorkers affected by adversity to learn valuable skills that will lead them to become role models in their communities,"said Mr. Burger. "I am honored to participate in this important nonprofit organization, and in this special event that will ensure the most promising youth development programs continue throughout the City."
Since its inception, The Catalog for Giving Urban Heroes Awards Benefit has highlighted remarkable urban youth who, through their participation in programs supported by The Catalog, have overcome tremendous odds to transform their lives and achieve success. Proceeds from the benefit will be distributed to the following organizations: Community-Word Project, Figure Skating in Harlem, Girls for Gender Equity, Groundswell Community Mural Project, Kids Creative, Opening Act, Reciprocity Foundation, ROW New York and Young Athletes.
The Catalog serves as a fund of funds, carefully vetting and selecting the premiere organizations that have demonstrated they have the capacity to transform under-served children and young adults, but require additional support to grow their programs and broaden their reach. Some programs work with kids in afterschool programs; others operate within the schools. Some hook kids with programming in sports; others promote arts and media. All of the programs provide kids who have had limited opportunities the chance of a lifetime, to develop new skills, seek new pathways and learn new ways to achieve success. Operational expenses for The Catalog are fully covered by its board of directors, so that 100 percent of donations go support its featured member organizations and the young people they serve. Since its inception in 1994, The Catalog has raised over $10 million for its programs and helped transform the lives of more than 150,000 children across the five boroughs.
The Catalog has tremendous support from the commercial real estate industry with board members that include Ken Horn of Alchemy Properties, James Nelson of Massey Knakal Realty Services, Margaret Streicker of Newcastle Realty, Steve Kohn of Cushman & Wakefield Sonnenblick-Goldman and Angela Olivo of Select Office Suites.
The benefit will be held at 7 World Trade Center, 49th Floor, which has been generously donated by Silverstein Properties For more information or to purchase tickets, please call (212) 765-8212 or visit www.catalogforgiving.org.
